I created this piece using egg tempera, the age-old method of painting with egg yolks and powdered pigments on an oak panel coated with numerous layers of rabbit skin glue (hide glue) and calcium bicarbonate (french chalk). This is one of the oldest forms of painting ever created, think medieval paintings of kings and queens. The method is very laborious, but well worth it. It creates an unmatched vibrancy, and the surface is very smooth with almost no shine to it. And it lasts forever. The frame is also made by me. This one is made from mahogany decking that I’ve mitered with darker mahogany keys inserted into the joints for strength and beauty. My aim is to make artwork that is elegant in every aspect of its construction. I hope you like them.

This painting was inspired by a beach called Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard where I live. The sunset here is breathtaking, and a great place to contemplate the awesome beauty of our world. This fresh water “river” forms each year as the pond on the other side of the dunes bleeds into the Vineyard Sound. A favorite place for children to play.
