Oil on oak panel. Artwork dimensions are 16” X 10.5”. Ipe frame made by the artist, outside dimensions are 20” X 15”.

I created this piece using oil paints, on a gessoed oak panel. The aim with this piece was to develop a method for emulating the amazing dune grass that holds our dunes in place. Beneath the surface of the sand there is this vast, fibrous network of roots and rhizomes. A woven, lattice basket of plants and sand. It’s so elegant.

The customer that purchased this painting said that when she thinks of a beach on Martha’s Vineyard she always thinks of a path leading to it. I feel the same way. All the best beaches take a little work to get to here on the Vineyard. I loved that she said that. That was exactly why I composed the painting this way.

I created this frame using Ipe, a South American hardwood. This is the first time I used Ipe. It has a beautiful grain with a brown and yellow color to it. I softened that color using a a grey gel coat stain, and it made the frame slightly purple, matching the painting. My aim is to make artwork that is elegant in every aspect of its construction. I hope you like it.
